I’m not sure it’s humanly possible for me to be less interested in the court case that has captured America’s attention (you know the one I’m talking about) but a Not Guilty verdict was rendered a few minutes ago and the nation is filled with people aghast at the apparent injustice they’ve just witnessed. Since I spent approximately 00:00:00-minutes watching the trial (and the seemingly endless commentary afterwards) I personally have no opinion. I have no idea ”who dunnit.”
What’s much more interesting to me is our culture’s innate sense of right & wrong that surfaces at times like this. We know intuitively that justice cannot be served unless someone pays the price for crimes that have been committed. Guilty people should not be set free.
IF popular opinion is correct & a guilty person was acquitted today, how does that make you feel?
Guilty.
But free.
Now imagine if YOU had committed a horrendous crime & were absolutely, undeniably guilty.
But an innocent person…
Loved you so much…
He turned himself in…
Was put on trial for your crimes…
Was declared guilty…
And voluntarily accepted the death penalty…
On your behalf…
So that you could be…
Free.
As crazy as it sounds — that, my friends, is the gospel.
“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free” (John 8:36 NLT).
All I’m saying is before you throw any stones today, remember that you, too, are guilty but free.
Only God knows what really happened in today’s case; and I trust his judgment in the End.
