Having reduced my life to 444 words — my motto for 2010 is “Make It Count!” Now I’m faced with the difficult task of determining how to make it count.

If you’d like to join me in my quest, here are the first steps you’ll need to take. (I’ll expound further on each of these in future posts.)

In the words of Count VonCount: “FIVE! … FIVE MAH-VELOUS STEPS! … AH-AH-AHH!”

Step 1.  Learn to see your life as part of a bigger story – the story of redemption. Like any good story, all of the individual chapters of your life should move the story progressively closer to its desired ending.

Step 2.  Understand that the story of redemption begins and ends with God. If you are trying to make your life count without God, you are a footnote at best. I’m sorry, but that’s just the way it is.

Step 3.  Determine your part in the story. In the story of redemption, you are not the main character — Jesus is. You have to accept the fact that you are a supporting character in a story about someone else.

Step 4.  Assess the storyline. Think of yourself as a character in a movie: Where did you come from? Where are you now? Where are you headed? If you don’t like the direction your storyline is taking, it’s not too late to edit the script.

Step 5.  Dare to dream. With steps 1-4 in mind, what do you want your character to do from this point forward? Be creative but realistic — everyone loves an inspirational story but, unless you’re writing fiction, there are limits.
