“It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” -George Eliot

As it turns out, George Eliot is actually Mary Anne Evans — a female novelist who wrote under a male pseudonym.

“George” passed away in 1880 but she is still known today because she knew how to write a good story.

What about you?

Your life is a subplot in the greatest story that’s ever been told — the story of redemption. Redemption is about Jesus Christ but you play an important supporting role.

Here’s the good news: you get to write your own lines!

The basic plot, setting, and main characters are outside of your control but you have great creative freedom in determining the role you’ll play within the larger story of redemption.

You can’t change what’s already happened – filming has wrapped on that part of your life. But since you’re still breathing, the story isn’t over yet!

If you want to make 2010 count, here’s Step 4:  Assess the storyline. Think of yourself as a character in a movie: Where did you come from? Where are you now? Where are you headed? If you don’t like the direction your storyline is taking, it’s not too late to edit the script.

As George Eliot writes, “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”

Start today.

Start now.

If you need help with this step, I highly recommend The Principle of the Path by Andy Stanley.   (more…)

Like most pastors, I have multiple Bibles in my office. Most of them are filled with study notes — occupying every crevice of available space with commentary, cross-references, Bible trivia, and the like.

But I have one Bible that’s the envy of all the other Bibles (pictured above). It has wide, empty margins. It gives me the space I need to write MY OWN THOUGHTS on the page.

In many ways MY LIFE is like a typical Bible. It’s jam-packed with things that occupy every scrap of available space. I’m not complaining — there’s a lot of really great stuffed crammed into those margins. But there are times when I wish I had some WHITE SPACE for my own thoughts. I need room to create & I look forward to a day when people are quoting ME instead of the other way around.

Have you ever felt that way?    (more…)

Do you KNOW YOUR PLACE?

Three small words…

One short sentence…

Infinite possibilities:

KNOW YOUR PLACE.

In an excellent critique of the missional church movement, Jonathan Leeman wrote, “…the real crisis [in contemporary Christianity] is spiritual and theological, stemming from the church’s failure to understand the postmodern context in which it now dwells. If the church wants to be relevant; if it wants to succeed in its mission, it must give attention to contextualization.”

“Contextualization” is a just fancy way of saying “Know Your Place.”

If you have any aspirations of making a difference in the world then you need to etch these three words into your spirit: KNOW … YOUR … PLACE.

1. Know your PLACE.

The basis of contextualization is understanding the PLACE in which you minister. Know your PLACE in history, culture, climate, and God’s redemptive plan. Your PLACE of ministry is much smaller than is generally recognized & simultaneously much larger than your zip code. It’s smaller because your PLACE is like your fingerprint — it’s unique — the only one of its kind. Stop trying to use the ministry model from your favorite megachurch (their model works in their PLACE, not yours). Your PLACE requires a new model built to suit your context. Your PLACE is larger than your zip code because technology has removed geographical boundaries. Blogs, social networking & web presence are not optional in modern ministry. Courtesy of the internet, your PLACE has global reach.   (more…)

Supercharged!Sunday nights are the worst. (I try to sleep – honest!) But after two powerful church services and a great night with friends watching the Super Bowl, I feel supercharged!

It’s 12:23 AM right now and my wife and children are fast asleep; but every time I close my eyes all I can think about is this week’s opportunities. Maybe this is the week I’ll change the world?

Either I’m broken or I’m doing what God created me to do. (more…)
